"Chad Niehaus truly lives his art. You may run into him at some out-of-the-way pictograph panel, as he transfers its essence onto a recycled door. Just as likely, you may see him wrestle an oversized canvas into his raft. Reminiscent of Japanese haiku, his brush strokes refine minimalist landscapes - their light, textures, contrasts - depicting the moods of the canyon country."
- Michael Engelhard, Author of Where the Rain Children Sleep and Redrock Almanac

Celebrate a special place with a commissioned work of art. I can work from a photograph or am happy to visit your out-of-the-way special spot on the Colorado Plateau and create the art there (when feasible).
Past projects include: plein air paintings at specific backcountry locations, rocking chairs, lazy susans, a sales counter, a bed, and linoleum block prints.
I prefer to include my clients in the art process as much as possible. I provide sketches and work-in-progress photos while your work is being created. I do this to ensure that your commissioned artwork brings you joy for years to come.

Subvert
"To reclaim this much control over one's food, to take it back from industry and science, is no small thing; indeed, in our time cooking from scratch and growing any of your own food qualify as subversive acts."
Michael Pollan, In Defense of Food
™
I was driving from Zion National Park to my home in Moab listening to Michael Pollan's book, In Defense of Food. I had been enjoying the tone of the book and it made for an easy 6-hour drive. As I was about ten minutes from home, I was grabbed by the quote to the right. I fell in love with the concept that self-sufficiency, financial responsibility, and taking care of one's basic needs could be considered acts of subversion to a dominant paradigm of waste, insatiability, and dependence.
I let the notion simmer a while. Then I wrote a long list of acts that shouldn't be subversive, but in our modern society of conspicuous consumerism, they most certainly are. I'm not talking about rock-through-the-bank-window type of acts; I'm talking about walking or riding a bike instead of driving, growing your own food, or fixing something instead of buying new. Simple things that everyone can do. Simple ways to regain control over our lives and maybe even enjoy ourselves a little along the way.
I took my list and started carving linoleum blocks as visual statements on this notion. I have six images at this point and have begun printing them on clothing. So far, so fun.
A limited line of SUBVERT™ items is now available in the Shop.
